Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

369 Caledonia Drive, Pawleys Island, SC 29585

In Myrtle Beach, golf courses try very hard to make themselves different from each other — with more than 100 courses along the Grand Strand, it’s the only way to stand out. But since it opened in 1995, the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has been noticeably different and without even trying. The golf course was designed by local Carolina native Mike Stranz, and it launched his growing career as an architect. Although not very long (just 6,500 yards from the tips), Caledonia calls for shots of every imaginable stripe as the holes wind through a piney woods. Stranz deftly wound little Augusta National-like creeks down the middle of fairways or surrounded small greens with large ponds, as he twisted fairways this way and that. Combined with absolutely flawless conditioning — one of Caledonia’s strongest selling points — the net result is an always fascinating and beguiling round of golf. From the day it opened, Caledonia has been listed in the top five courses in the Myrtle Beach area and tee times are always in demand. It’s that good a golf course. Visitors always want to know if they should bring a fishing pole. Not really. The course sits on the site of an old plantation along the Waccamaw River (it takes its name from the Scottish heritage of the wife of a plantation owner of old) and in more recent years was used as an exclusive hunting and fishing camp. The clubhouse is an authentic replica of an old plantation manor house.
