The marketers sometimes get a little carried away in Myrtle Beach: with more than 100 competitors, it’s not hard to understand why! So despite all the blather about Heather Glen’s “Scottish” sensibilities —it’s in South Carolina for goodness sakes! — it’s still a fun golf course and well worth a visit. The work of Willard Byrd and local architect Clyde Johnston (they couldn’t help themselves and named one of the large water hazards here the “Firth of Clyde!), Heather Glen is actually a lovely stroll through beautiful pine forests, with some specimens looming large at more than 100 years old. The elevation changes from hole to hole, shot to shot, and the use of water is excellent in protecting many of the rolling greens. There are three nines at Heather Glen, each an interesting collection of challenges, with doglegs, burns and lakes, even stands of trees to play around. Each of the holes carries a name, like in the old country, so that one is playing the Redan Hole (avoiding the encroaching water instead of a line of bunkers) or the home hole which calls for a long approach over Clyde’s Firth. And somewhere out there is a bunker they’ve named the Devil’s Mistress! Conditions are always top-notch. And the Tudor-design clubhouse makes a good place to get a “wee dram”, or whatever the local equivalent may be.
