This private-turned-public course in Pawleys Island is not only a beautiful Dan Maples design, but it may have more historic sites than any other course in Myrtle Beach. There is a slave cemetery next to the 8th fairway, an old chimney standing next to the 5th, an original old tobacco barn still standing, and rumors are that George Washington himself once visited the old Willbrook House.
Into this beautiful old setting, Maples inserted 18 beautiful holes. There are beautiful wetlands areas (including one which butts up against the first green) and deep hardwood forests. The 6th is a tricky par three of just 145 yards, with water waiting all around the green.
The 380-yard 14th is a great par four with water adjoining the fairway and sneaking around behind the green. Yet the landing areas are well defined, if a bit challenging. And the closing hole is a beauty, too, with two aisles of towering live oaks creating a claustrophobic alley off the tee, and a green well surrounded by sand.
Peaceful, natural and well-maintained, it seems as if it’s been here for centuries. Which, in one sense, it has been.
