This course was one of the first designed by Davis Love III, a Georgia resident who grew up on another barrier island down the coast. So his routing has a natural feel as it works its way through the pine woods and along the marshes and creeks of this typical Lowcountry terrain.
Indeed, Love did not try and move a lot of dirt to create this course, but kept a minimalist approach of working the holes into the existing landscape. His last three holes may be minimalist in design, but they are maximum-tough. The course closes with a 564-yard 16th, a 467-yard 17th and a 520-yard 18th!
While Fripp Island’s other course is more open to the sea and its constant breeze, this track cuts through some heavy foliage. In fact, before the course was built, Hollywood filmmakers used the same terrain as backdrop for filming both The Jungle Book and the VietNam-war scenes from the hit Tom Hanks vehicle, Forrest Gump.
There are no bombs left, thankfully, except what you can create off the tees of this enjoyable and challenging course. The surrounding resort and real estate development is very family oriented, with miles of beachfront, fishing holes, bike trails and planned activities for all ages.
