Located in the Sunset Beach area north of Myrtle Beach’s main hubbub, the Angels’ Trace facility offers two excellent Clyde Johnston designs set in an area of piney woods, marshy ponds and slightly hilly terrain. Given this canvas, Johnston responded with two extremely sporty golf courses. The North course offers a challenge that’s always fun, but never too difficult to prevent the average golfer from having a good time. Although water comes into frequent play, only a few holes ask for a forced carry to avoid a penalty. Accurate driving is at a premium at Angels’ Trace North: the fairways appear wide open, but there are almost always bunkers placed in the landing areas, and occasionally a pond or creek as well. The greens here are quite large and not too undulating. Coming home, the 15th and 16th holes will get every golfer’s attention. Fifteen is a long par 3 with water lurking behind the green, while the short par four 16th calls for an approach shot over the pond, with marsh grass and pot bunkers swallowing any shot that’s not precise. Even in golf-crazy Myrtle Beach, Angels’ Trace and its two courses stand out among the crowd.
