It is a proud boast among the members of Charnwood Forest that they belong to ‘the oldest, friendliest and most picturesque golf club in Leicestershire’. They are probably right on all counts. Founded in 1890, the nine hole course is certainly the oldest in the county. It is also an undeniably hospitable club, while the location is both striking and extraordinary. Occupying an area of Special Scientific Interest, Charnwood Forest is a botanists’ and geologists’ haven. The landscape is positively prehistoric (680 million years old to be precise) and is characterised by craggy, volcanic outcroppings and dense, dark woodland. In summer it is place of great beauty; in winter it is eerie.
Heather, gorse and bracken – plus the occasional boulder – are the principal natural hazards on the golf course. Unusually – but not surprisingly given the terrain – there are no bunkers. However a number of dry stone walls and ditches do feature and greatly affect play. Golf here is never dull!
The course begins with a deceptively tough hole, but it is the 3rd and 4th that are more likely to be remembered due to the stone wall that crosses their fairways (à la North Berwick), threatening the drive at the 3rd and approach at the 4th.
The 7th is the more challenging of the two par threes, and the dog-legged 9th makes for an heroic conclusion as players decide how much of the corner they dare attempt to cut off – a wooded copse and an Out of Bounds await the over ambitious.

M1 junction 23 – then A512 to Snells Nook Lane turn right to traffic light junction – straight on 1 mile Golf Course on left hand side. A6 to Quorn then B591 to Woodhouse Eaves.
