David Davies once described the Notts Golf Club at Hollinwell as ‘a great gorse-filled bowl of golfing delights’. Hollinwell, as it is usually called, rivals Ganton and Woodhall Spa as Britain’s premier heathland course north of London. As a test of golf it is not quite as demanding as the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire courses, for its bunkers are less punitive, but it is long (7000 yards plus from the championship tees) and invariably rewards accurate and intelligent play.
The abundance of gorse is indeed a striking feature at Hollinwell. There is plenty of heather and bracken too, and with a wealth of silver birch, oaks, pines and firs adorning the fairways it is splendid setting in which to play golf. Dominating the backdrop are the tree-covered Robin Hood Hills which semi-circle above the course, so creating the bowl effect.
Willie Park was responsible for the excellent design. Like Woodhall Spa and Ganton, it begins with a straightforward opening hole. The 2nd, however, is a strong par four which curves towards a green framed by a giant rock known as Robin Hood’s Chair. Another celebrated hole on the front nine is the 8th where you drive across an attractive pond; to the right of the tee, partly hidden by trees, is the ‘Holy Well’ from which the name Hollinwell derives. An outstanding run of holes commences at the 13th, ‘an absolute terror’ of a long par three, with the two-shot 15th being perhaps the finest hole of all.
