On the south shores of the Firth of Forth, Longniddry is one of a host of courses that populate this area. It is chosen here because, in the midst of predominantly links courses such as Muirfield, Gullane Number 1 or North Berwick’s West Links, Longniddry offers a slightly different character and one that many golfers enjoy.
Laid out by Harry Colt in 1921 overlooking Seton Sands, one would presume to play over the roll and pitch of a typical links layout but this is not the case.
The course presents itself in two distinct halves, the front being tighter and more enclosed with the second half being open and prey to the many winds that patrol this estuary. There are links characteristics to be found but established trees with many newer plantings coming into maturity soften this aspect making it more parkland. While variety is part of the appeal, it is the general quality of the course that makes is so popular, its fine properties endearing it to major tournaments but for its length at only 6,200 yards. This is no easy course though, as demonstrated by the fact that the SSS at 70 is 2 shots above the par. Amongst the tougher holes is the 3rd, a long test on the Par 4 limit of 460 yards. There are no Par 5’s at Longniddry, just long, defying Par 4’s. For relief, the 6th is a gorgeous, short hole played from an elevated tee with trees surrounding the green.
The course has undergone a recent programme of development and the bunker hazards are now more formidable with newly turfed facing. Another area to avoid is the thick, rough grass, in some places standing at a foot high.

DIRECTIONS
The course lies to the north of Longniddry Village, and is accessed via Links Road, in the village. Longniddry is approximately two miles north of the A1, and 17 miles east of Edinburgh City Centre. Directions: From the A1, take the B6363 to Longniddry Village. Turn right and first left (down Links Road).
