Mention of the Championship Course at Carnoustie undoubtedly conjures up mixed feelings of trepidation and excitement in the minds of many golfers. Known as one of the toughest challenges in professional golf, this is however only one of three eighteen hole courses situated on the links of this small seaside town on the east coast of Scotland.
The Burnside Course lies immediately adjacent to its famous neighbour and their holes are closely interlocked. A ‘burn’ is the Scots word for a stream and, as its name suggests, moving water plays an important role on the course. At the short 5th, for example, a burn almost encircles the green like a giant horseshoe leaving little room for error.
Between the water hazards and the rough, Burnside provides a good examination of skill, even if it is not quite as demanding as the Championship Course. A good variety of short holes, dog-legs and greens of varying shapes and widths collude to give much to occupy the minds of visitors. Those coming in the latter part of the summer will also be rewarded with large areas of purple heather between many of the fairways, a resplendent splash of colour that provides a kind of warmth even when a chill wind is blowing in from the sea.
Several holes have rolling fairways similar to those found on many of famous links courses, with deep depressions in front of some of the greens and dunes clumped together giving a mottled appearance to the landscape in early morning or late evening sunlight. These reflections of such noble golfing locations make Burnside a truly worthy cohabitant of the Carnoustie Links.
