Set on a steep hillside in an area famous for its whisky distilling, Dufftown golf course rewards the visitor with both a challenge and some of the most stunning views from any golf course in Scotland.
The turf is in good condition for the altitude and exposure although a good degree of accuracy is required to hold some fairly severely sloping fairways. At only 5,308 yards from the white pegs, this is a course that favours precision rather than length.
The 5th is a cheeky test of nerve. At only 143 yards, the hole is both short and atypically flat but runs tight against the heather on the golfer’s left; a large bunker tucked close in to the right of the narrow green leaves little room for error. Another short hole of note is Fittie Burn. The name of the par three 7th is perhaps an understatement, however, a huge, deep gully swallowing any short ball greedily.
If there is a view to strike a real sense of awe into the heart of the golfer, however, it is that from the 10th medal tee. A short heather bed lined by enormous larch trees provides a launch pad for the most spectacular long, steep drop down to the green, a barely visible mark in the distance. The sight of the distillery in the valley below may set even the most resolute teetotaller wishing for a wee dram here to steady his swing.
