Only a short drive away from Nairn to the west (host to the Walker Cup in 1999), the Moray Golf Club at Lossiemouth to the east and a host of other superb courses in the area, Forres is an excellent base for a golfing break. At the foot of Cluny Hill on the southern edge of the town, however, Forres itself boasts an excellent parkland course.
The first four holes have a hilly theme which is reflected elsewhere on the course, albeit in the main less severely. There are some outstanding tee positions to enjoy whilst undulating ground presents testing approaches to some of the greens. Granite blocks at each tee provide well laid out hole information, including a plan- a welcome touch on what is generally a well-presented course.
A test of both accuracy and judgement is required at the 16th, a short par four which nevertheless requires a difficult decision to be made at the tee. The fairway is split lengthways by a large clump of gorse leaving a high section to the golfer’s left and a low area to the right. The approach shot from the right is certainly easier but the landing area is very much smaller here and is made even more treacherous by the pond that borders the fairway. Take the much higher left-hand route and finding a decent lie from the tee should be less difficult; however, several bunkers and a hollow in front of the green make the green a much more intimidating target from this direction. The hole typifies the choices that must be made on what is an entertaining and thought-inducing example of inland golf.
