Tarland Golf Club, set on the northern slopes of the Dee Valley, is only nine holes and appears quite elementary on a score card map. Playing over the course is an entirely different experience. Each of its nine holes offers a different golfing encounter.
The 1st is an easy start but not without its hazards, either from a fade that rolls into the rough to the right or by playing a second shot too long over the green and into the large, waiting bunker.
It is the 4th and 5th holes that are the most notable on this course. At a stretch of the imagination, the 4th has shades of Augusta with a burn and bridge crossing before a pine-surrounded green. The 5th is a long Par 3 of 238 yards with high trees infringing on the left and a rough road and more trees to the right so this is a very demanding shot.
The remaining holes travel back and forth on a more open area but there is plenty adventure in each of them. The course records stands at only one under Par so this gives some indication of the calibre of the club. Good golfers enjoy it and average golfers are happy with the easy walking and lovely views. Part of the attraction at Tarland, although by no means a measure of its quality, is the extraordinarily cheap cost of a day’s golf. For the price of a glove, you can play till your heart’s content.
The little clubhouse is very friendly, comfortable and serves good meals through the season.
