Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf course covers a thin, wizened peninsula jutting out from the Black Isle into the Moray Firth. This is a picturesque and pastoral part of Scotland but the course presents some vigorous challenges.
The beach and water surrounding the course are not ‘out of bounds’ and a single-track road, also ‘in bounds’, dissects the course for its length. You play the ball as it lies on these hazards or lift and drop for a penalty stroke.When Fortrose and Rosemarkie looks lovely and docile beware of that snarling tiger, the wind. There are only two holes that go with or against it, the 9th and the 5th, while the rest are crossed by the prevailing south-westerlies.
Although it is put down as a traditional Scottish links course there are not many of what you would call ‘links holes’. The 4th is most typical and a very good hole with links type undulations. The 17th is an excellent driving hole with restricting bunkers on the left and a jungle of rough and whins on the right. The main difficulty throughout the course is the small greens.
At the tip of Chanonry Point, just beyond the golf course, stands a memorial stone to the legendary Brahan Seer who was burned in a barrel of oil here for revealing too much detail of the Count of Seaforth’s extra-marital activities. The Point provides one of the best places to see the Moray Firth’s school of bottlenose dolphins who regularly make an appearance.

DIRECTIONS
A9 north of Inverness to Tore Roundabout. A832 to Fortrose (east direction). Turn right at Fortrose Police Station to Golf Club.
