It might seem confusing that a course called Glasgow Gailes is more than
30 miles from the city. The explanation is that in 1892 Glasgow Golf Club, decided to open a second facility for its members on the Ayrshire coast. The public course that they had been playing over in Alexandra Park in Glasgow had become a little too popular, hence the move.
The now exclusive Glasgow Golf Club also plays at Killermont in Bearsden in Glasgow, a course without provision for visitors. But its sister course on the Ayrshire coast makes guests most welcome.
Laid out on the coast, just south of the town of Irvine, Glasgow Gailes has the added benefit of remaining free of frost throughout the year due to the temperate effects of the Gulf Stream.
The course is lined with heather and gorse, which form the major fairway hazards. But it is the luxurious greens, beautiful to behold amidst the hoary growth, that provide much of the action and adversity on this course. Apart from the 7th and 10th which are similar, no two holes are the same at Gailes. Each hole presents something singular in its design and challenge. The 14th is a worthy Par 5 of 526 yards off the Medal tees. Two humps stand sentinel 70 yards short of the green, which can be reached with two good shots onto the large putting area.
With recent improvements to the clubhouse, Glasgow Gailes is as good as any of the courses to be found on this wonderful stretch of coast and should be included on an Ayrshire itinerary.

DIRECTIONS
A77 from Glasgow to Kilmarnock. A71 to Irvine. A78 towards Ayr and leave at the first exit. Take Marine Drive. Glasgow Gailes is off Marine Drive to the right.
