Machrihanish Golf Club (The)
Request A Tee Time For This Course

Situated on the south western tip of the Mull of Kintyre, Machrihanish is perhaps the most geographically remote of all the great courses in the British Isles. And yet, if ever a journey was worth the effort …..
For the lover of traditional links golf, Machrihanish has everything. The layout has altered quite a bit since the late 19th century when it was designed by ‘Old’ Tom Morris, but the natural character of the course remains. Not only are the fairways among the most naturally undulating in the British Isles, but the greens are some of the most amazingly contoured – awkward stances and blind shots are very much a feature of Machrihanish.
There is nothing blind, however, about the course’s legendary opening hole – from the tee the challenge ahead is very visible. It is a long par four of 423 yards and the only way of ensuring that the green can be reached in two shots is by hitting a full-blooded drive across the waters of Machrihanish Bay. From the back tees a 200 yard carry is called for. ‘Intimidating’ is the description: ‘Death or Glory’ is the result.
After the 1st the rest must be easy? Not a chance! If the opening hole tests the drive, several of the following holes will test the approach shot, particularly perhaps the 2nd, 7th and 14th. Machrihanish has its own ‘Postage Stamp’ hole, the 4th – just 123 yards – and there are successive short holes at the 15th and 16th. The course starts to wind down at the 17th and pars here are frequently followed by birdies at the 18th and, of course, considerable celebration at the 19th.

DIRECTIONS
Approximately three hours drive from Glasgow. The most direct route is by the A82 to Tarbet on Loch Lomond, then the A83 via Inveraray and Lochgilphead.
